Peñiscola: Pope´s City
The city is located in a peninsula, connected with the mainland by an isthmus, easier to defend during the Past Ages. Between the years 1294 and 1307 the castle was built by Templar Knights on the remains of the ancient Arab Fortress. The “Ecclesiastic Secession” marked its history with the presence of two Popes, Benedict XIII, (the “Moon Pope”) and his successor, Clement VIII (last Avignon Pope). The “Moon Pope” was exiled in Peñiscola settling there the Papal Court and transforming the castle into a Papal Palace. Peñiscola preserves nowadays many monuments, as the Papal Castle, the Saint Mary Church, the Maritime Museum, etc.
