The Abbey Route
Departure to Simat, where the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Mary of the Valldigna was built in 1298 by James II. Rodrigo Borgia and his son Caesar Borgia were famed abbots of this Monastery. We´ll visit the Royal Entrance, the Cloister, the Chapter House, the Abbot’s Palace, etc. Later we´ll continue to Gandia, which still retains its medieval flavour, with the gothic style Saint Mary´s Church, the neoclassical style Town Hall, and the well-known Palace of the Borgia family. We´ll continue to another outstanding monument, the Monastery of Saint Hieronymus of Cotalba, built by the first Gandia´s Royal Duke, Alphonso of Aragon, under the supervision of his lieutenant Pere March, father of the famous poet Ausias March, and later owned by Borgia family.
